I was looking forward to seeing Doc MacLean’s return to the Slice, Oct.29, but the event said Texas Flood would be opening the show.
It’s never a good idea for a solo acoustic performer for follow an electrifying blues rock act like Paul Kype and Texas Flood, so I missed most of MacLean’s show.
I caught the last few songs from the Toronto/ South Africa based Delta bluesman. But was in time to be captivated by his growl and part spoked word, part gutterral singing.
He told a few stories and made way for Paul Kype and Texas Flood’s usual hot set of blues rock music.
Paul Kype and lead guitarist Steve Keenan seamlessly traded lead vocals and solos on a set of mostly well worn blues rock covers. Bassist Tyson Maiko and drummer Brady Valgardson held down the rhythm.
They played their usual spirited version of Van Morrison’s “Into The Mystic” and of course some Stevie Ray Vaughan.
They worked through their set of blues infused rock and roll which had an enthusiastic crowd dancing.
One of many highlights was the Allman Brothers’ “Rambling Man,” which featured Keenan and Kype playing some sweet harmonized guitar leads.
