Calgary punk stalwarts Belvedere send 2021 off with punk/metal style

Calgary punk stalwarts Belvedere made a long awaited return to Lethbridge to play the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Saturday, Dec. 11. I missed Sessions’ opening set, but was just in time for Belevedere who brought a metal flavour to their brand of ’90s pop punk.

Belvedere rocking the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Dec.11.

They were supposed to play the owl in October, but had to cancel because of Covid. But the show was worth the delay.

They were winding up a big 24 show tour in Lethbridge, and it showed in how tight they were. The singer noted it was their last show of the year and it was a good one.

They beamed ear to ear as they bounced all over the stage.

The lead singer noted they hadn’t played Lethbridge since 1998 when they opened for the Dayglo Abortions, which would have been a great show as both bands blend elements of metal with punk rock.

There were a lot of  hot guitar solos from both the lead singer and the lead guitarist, who both took turns soloing and even played some pretty cool harmonized leads.

Because of the lead singer’s voice, the gang vocals and  the lead guitarist, Belvedere sounded like a blend of the Offspring and Sum-41.

I couldn’t hear much of the lyrics, but loved their energy and their tightness.

Unfortunately I missed the Youngbloods’ closing set.
