Music transcends all cultural and linguistic boundaries. At least that’s the philosophy of Smithers based, Cuban born Latin musician Alex Cuba, who returned to Lethbridge to play a sold out Geomatic Attic, March 15.
“ Early in my career I got nervous about singing in Spanish to audiences who couldn’t understand a word,” Cuba quipped to the crowd, which featured several fluent Spanish speakers.
The only words I could understand were ironically, “No Comprendo,” in a couple of the songs but that didn’t stop me from enjoying a set of music full of fleet fingered guitar picking that easily ran the gamut from pop, to folk, to jazz to Latino licks. Not to mention vocal hooks so sharp you could hang your hat on.
The Juno and Grammy Award winning musician looked completely blissed out as he switched between electric and acoustic guitar throughout his show.
he told a few stories abotu perfoming at the Latin Grammy Awards and chatted engagingly with the packed house.
The crowd wanted to participate, so he got them to cheer every time they noticed the song title mentioned in the lyrics. To wind down the first set, he got everyone to sing to sing along with a complicated descending vocal melody.
