Arts Days, Pauly Shore and a lot more this week

E-mail Print PDF
Of course, this week, the big arts news is Arts Days, but there is something for everyone this week.
The local art and  music community are all set to party, Sept. 17-19. A good chunk of the Lethbridge music and art

community will be at Galt Gardens and all over downtown showing of just how much Lethbridge has to offer. Which is a lot. Admission is free to all events. Most of them are at Galt Gardens, however there is a First Nations Blackfoot showcase at the Sterndale Bennett— Yates Theatre, Sept. 18 including country star Shane Yellowbird. The show begins at 2 p.m.
In addition to a full schedule of events available at http://www.artslethbridge.org/aac-initiatives/artsdaysartwalk.html, there is a lot happening around the city this week.

There are a couple huge shows tonight. Upbeat Vancouver based hip hop/R and B / jazz/ reggae  folk collective Delhi2Dublin, who were a hit of South Country Fair this summer are back to heat up the Slice tonight for a sold out crowd.

On the other hand, if you want to laugh Pauly Shore, MTV personality Pauly Shore and star of movies like “Son In Law”, “Encino Man,” and “Pauly Shore Is Dead,” and most recently “Adopted,” is back in Lethbridge to entertain the crowd at Average Joes. Pickle opens up the show at 8 p.m. Tickets are $35 in advance, $40 at the door.

Local folk/rock band the Necessities are officially launching their debut ”Forbidden Fruit,” Sept. 18 at the Slice. Admission is free as it is part of Arts Days. Jesse and the Dandelions as well as  Dean Selena are also performing.
Also this week, the Mocha Cabana has a special Thursday night show featuring Regina singer/ songwriter Kerri Sankow who just released her five song EP “Underneath My Skin” recorded and produced by WCMA Winner David J Taylor in April of 2010 and has already received regular airplay on CBC Radio One.
There is a big show on Wednesday at the Phantom Hall featuring the Kettle Black as well as Mr. PErsonal, Berserker and the Phantom Creeps. It begins at 9 .m. at 457 10th St N.

The University of Lethbridge Headbangers’ Society also begins their season, Sept. 17 with a  big show at the Zoo with local metal band Enceladus, who are also  releasing their new CD as well as Samandriel and Black Pestilence. Admission is $10.
There is another big rock show at Average Joes, Sept. 17 featuring local burlesque duo the Brazen Hussies along with Mr. Personal, the Berserkers, Smokestack Jacks, Phantom Creeps, Double Jack and Hot Pie closing things off in the wee hours of the morning.

Also on Sept. 17, local independent record store Blueprint celebrates its fourth birthday with a huge free show at the Slice featuring Calgary’s Heat Ray, Savk, the Moby Dicks, Fist City and Chief Mountain.
On the other end of the spectrum, Dale Ketcheson is playing classical guitar at the Mocha Cabana from 6-9 p.m., Sept. 17 and 7-10 p.m., Sept. 18.

For bluesophiles,  Darryl Düus, Cory Royniak and Dave Tilsley are hosting a popular new Friday night open mic at Jimmy’s Brasserie every Friday. It is always good news when a  new music venue like this one not only opens up, but also draws steady crowds.

Another new venue opened this past weekend where the Wooden Kilt used to be on 13 Street North. It is now a sports bar called Bobby Johns, which will also be occasionally featuring live acoustic music. Paul Kype and Greg Gomola christened it during their grand opening, Friday.

At the Casino, popular Top 40 cover band, Suite 33 is back in town for the weekend. There are several choices for cover bands this weekend, including  Fast Times playing HB’s Lounge on Sept. 18 and Unzipped at the Front Row Pub both Friday and Saturday. If you like Led Zeppelin, the Led Zeppelin Show are back on Sept. 18 as well at Average Joes.
As always, the Owl Acoustic Lounge features laid back music  on the weekends with local blues and folk player Matt Robinson playing Friday and Bridgette Yarwood and Angus Wilson on Saturday. Their Wednesday night L.A. Beat open jams are slowly picking up steam as are their open mics on Mondays.

Also, Mike Grabow has a regular Saturday gig at the 1010 Pub.
The fun continues Sunday with more Arts Days and Vancouver surf-rockers the Modelos.
