Brenna MacQuarrie bared her soul at the Tongue n Groove, June 24.
She didn’t have a lot of people in the audience, well not as many as she deserved especially as her music is made for dancing.
She sang beautiful soul music, some R and B and mixed in a few covers by the likes of Jill Scott and an excellent version of Aretha Franklin’s “You Make Me Feel like a Natural Woman.”
Her band was superb, with plenty of disco era wah wah guitar and fluid bass-lines from Jory Kinjo, who was to play his own set later on.
Throughout they kept a solid groove meant for dancing, though there were no dancers to be seen, at least while I was there.
