As expected, ghosts, ghouls, serial killers, Duffman and many other
costumed creepy crawlies were out in force for Halloween on the Saturday
night, Oct. 31. Several venues featured bands playing an array of
covers.
And all of them had excellently costumed crowds.
The Slice featured a variety of local musicians doing their best Black Sabbath impersonations.
The
set I saw featured Aaron Trozzo done up as a convincing Ozzy Osbourne,
complete with long haired black wig sunglasses and large cross hanging
from his neck.
They played a lot of dark, detuned , obscure cuts from Black Sabbath's early years.
Down the street at Average Joes, the Chevelles, dressed as surgeons, played to a good sized crowd.
They
played lots of popular hits including a sweet singalong of “Sweet
Caroline,” and an excellent version of “The Monster Mash.”
The Owl
Acoustic Lounge had a full house for multi-instrumental funk rock trio Adequate who played a more than adequate set of funk, rock and disco as
they traded instruments and even knocked off a solid version of “
Thriller,” which had a packed house trying to dance in bulky costumes.
Things were a little more laid back at the Onion, where it was all about modern country music.
The
Old Man River band played plenty of contemporary country hits and went
all out on their costumes which included singer Austrian Graf dressed
as Alice and bassist Ray Banman dressed as the Mad Hatter.
Graf did
an excellent job on Gretchen Wilson’s “Here for the Party.”
They also
added Dire Straits’ “Walk of Life to the set, which was more similar to
Shooter Jennings’ cover of the song.
