Celebrate family day with family art and Casa

The weather outside is frightful, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with your family for Family Day, Feb. 15.

Casa has just the ticket on their Youtube channel  as they will be offering the opportunity to create a 3-D family portrait out of air-dry clay.

“ It’s not regular clay, The Allied Arts Council is still closed, and people would be running back and forth. It gets a little crazy,” said Allied Arts Council Communications co-ordinator Kelaine Devine.
At noon on Feb. 15, Casa artists  Aaron Hagan and Claire Reid will be providing step-by step instructions to create air dry clay portraits and sculptures of family members and even pets on their Youtube channel http://bit.ly/CasaFamily or https://www.youtube.com/CASAlethbridge/.

“ They will be giving lessons about how to create figures and hair and other features,” Devine described.

Once the pieces are dry, finish them with watercolour or tissue paper decoupage. your finished pieces can be included in Casa’s virtual family gallery by tagging them @casalethbridge or email an image to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for a chance to win a free children’s course (ages 6-12).

The Allied Arts Council started giving 150 kits away on Feb. 3.
Devine noted about half of the kits are already spoken for. Because supplies are limited, if you want a kit, you must reserve one in advance  by calling 403-327-2272
“ The kits are heavily subsidized by the Allied Arts Council. Art supplies are difficult to source especially during Covid. So once they’re gone, they’re gone. You have to pick them up by the time we close on Saturday, because we’re closed Sunday and Monday,” she said, adding one kit will cover a family with  two children and pets.

Each kit contains a rainbow of full-sheet tissue paper, glue, 10 paintbrushes, an 8 oz. package of air-dry clay, two sculpting tool and a watercolour palette (enough for two children). The first kit is free, subsequent kits are $10.
“Otherwise you’ll have to scrounge around the house. There are no rules in art,” Devine said, adding you can still submit your works for the contest.

“The winners receive a free art course when Casa re-opens,” she continued, adding Allied Arts Council will leave  the tutorial up  on their channel. The deadline to submit is March 15.

“ It’s really just a chance to get creative with your family,” she continued.
