Description

Within a mere 12 months of their debut release "Ode to Hyde", MAGNOLIUS has managed to garner worldwide acclaim. The eclectic duo has independently headlined tours across Canada, Asia and Brazil including shows in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Seoul, Singapore, Taipei, Bangkok, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Toronto in less than one year. Hailing from Toronto, members Shan Vincent de Paul and Derek DaCosta use hip-hop as the core vein to connect with various other genres such as electronic, drum and bass, jazz, punk and rock. Both members have been writing and performing as part of a larger six man collective known as Soliva Spit Society. As a collective, the crew released their debut EP "Test the Waters" in 2003 and began to create a buzz in the Canadian independent hip hop scene.  The EP received rotation on various college stations across Canada, the US and the UK. The group went on to share the stage with some of hip hop's key figures such as Del the Funky Homosapien (Hieroglyphics), Edan, Louis Logic, C-Rayz Walz (def jux), and Canadian heavy hitters Kardinal Offishall and Swollen Members.

Winning praises from media worldwide, MAGNOLIUS has been featured in various print and broadcast, including Brazil's largest national newspaper (OGlobal), the cover of "Art Beat" magazine in Singapore and have been touted as refreshingly original across the international independent hip hop scene.  "Operating at the highest level, MAGNOLIUS has crafted a quick-witted hip hop experience that reveals just how far the genre has progressed in recent years"(Toby Rogers, "Rant Magazine" (UK) ).  With their ever growing fan base, the duo has sold out venues not only on Canadian turf in Toronto and Saskatoon, but also in Sao Paulo, Rio, Seoul and Taipei, laying the foundation for a cult following.

In the summer of 2007, the group independently released their debut project "Ode to Hyde".  Though the project took a reasonable 4 months to complete, it is the culmination of a life long friendship between the two members.  The impeccable chemistry between the duo is made apparent on every track of their debut opus. The album's ten tracks hurl the listener through a melange of experimentation and moods fusing hip hop with the likes of drum and bass, jazz, electronic, rock and funk. Shan and Derek's nimble word play juxtaposed against the eclectic concoctions of the album's prominent producer, Mike Denheyer, is a marriage made in the cosmos.  Not only was the album well received by fans, the duo was nominated for best hip hop song for 'Human Race' at the Ontario Independent Music Awards and  was also nominated for a Toronto Independent Music Award in the 'best urban' category, as well as receiving the Arts Acclaim Award in Brampton this summer for their debut release.

After the completion of the project, the duo took their sounds on the road. Pushing the limits on record was simply not enough for the group.  The MAG quickly set off to promote "Ode to Hyde" on a western Canadian tour quickly followed by the "Destrjoy! Tour" across Asia. Upon their return to Toronto, the group performed for a sold out crowd for their local following and left shortly afterwards for their South American tour, where they were invited to headline Brazil's highly prestigious hip hop event 'Zoeira'. Accompanied by a unique visual display (all directed and edited by the MAG), the emcees spew out their tracks with intense energy while several video screens flash a video montage perfectly co-ordinated with the lyrics and music. The subtle intricacies and dynamic stage presence that MAGNOLIUS displays is simply a testament to a decade of performing experience.

MAGNOLIUS is currently wrapping up their sophomore release "Mary Musth", completing a DVD release of short films all directed by the duo as well as preparing for their European and Australian tours this fall/winter.

LEO37 is pretty much awesome.

Born on the Canadian prairies, Leo Shia began his involvement in awesomeness early on with organ lessons at the age of 8, trumpet at 10, drums at 14 and turntables and rapping shortly thereafter. In 2001, leaving behind repeatedly sold-out performances with various local bands, Leo relocated to Toronto where he soon found himself on stage and in studio with some of the city's most acclaimed jazz, pop and hip-hop artists, including Joel Joseph (Nelly Furtado), Dafydd Hughes (Esthero & Feist), Mark Rogers (Rahzel), and Soliva.  Meanwhile, a graduate of Ryerson University's prestigious Radio and Television Arts Program, Leo was host to the school’s most popular online radio show, Noise Therapy.

In late 2004, following a mad season in the UK, Leo recorded Winter, his debut release on PPF House.  Met with rave response, the seven track EP sold out of its initial pressing in just under a month.  This was followed a year later with Summer, a full length offering which traded in Winter's digital soundscapes for a live band made up of some of Canada's biggest jazz heavyweights.  "From jazz to rock... disco to drum & bass... the point [of Summer] is positivity, but there's also an emphasis on pushing musical boundaries." (The Star Phoenix - Saskatoon)

In support of the new album, Leo booked, managed and headlined the successful Giant Steps cross-Canada tour, which was then followed by a slew of opening slots for some of underground hip-hop's biggest acts, including Del the Funky Homosapien, Swollen Members and C Rayz Walz.

In 2007, Leo executive produced and performed on the PPF House Bsement Suite, a compilation disc showcasing new music from PPF's impressive roster of collaborators.  Declared "... one of the most original sounds in Canada" by Exclaim Magazine, Basement Suite was supported by another successful cross-Canada tour, as well as the DESTRJOY! Asia tour which took Leo and fellow PPF Housemates, Magnolius, through packed rooms and sold-out crowds in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Bangkok, Manila, Seoul, Singapore and Taipei.  "... skilled flow and massive stage presence... Even the people chatting in the back of the room had to stand up and take notice when Leo grabbed the mic."  (+886 Magazine - Taipei)

Drawing inspiration from the careers of artists like Miles Davis, the Soulquarians, the Native Tongues, Radiohead and Björk, LEO37 strives for forward-thinking music with a thick groove.  Be it as a solo performer, a producer or a turntablist, his range is deep and diverse, offering forth a smart, danceable and utterly unique picture of the world.

Currently working on projects with Sunclef, RAM!, MAGNOLIUS, Sixth Street Voodoo and the Worst Pop Band Ever, 2009 promises to be a year of full on LEO37 awesome. Stay tuned.
