Gunner
& Smith began in 2010 as a solo project by folk artist Geoff Smith.
After Smith recorded the Letter of Marque EP in early 2011 Gunner &
Smith quickly underwent an evolution beginning that summer. Over the
course of several months Smith gathered together a group of talented
musicians who now make up the band. Bassist Nick Dueck and drummer
Jordan Bechtel where the first additions soon followed by vocalist Olya Kutsiuruba and finally guitarist Lance Brown to complete the five member band.
They have since become known for their, “pleasing harmonies with just
enough grit to get you out of your seat” (E, Hello Saskatoon). The hints
of blues and jazz that cut through the unique folk rock sound make a
Gunner & Smith show a must see. New audiences are always impressed
with the depth and variety of styles that make Gunner & Smith a
standout from the folk rock genre.
The group recently finished
recording a six song EP, Compromise is a Loaded Gun, with skilled
recording engineer Jordan Smith at The Avenue Recording Studio in
Saskatoon. The record boasts a unique gathering of roots charms to make
“a full, hard-hitting sound that is both expansive and lush.” (Chris
Morin, Ominocity). Compromise is a Loaded Gun was released August 3,
2012. Gunner & Smith recently performed at U of S Welcome Week and
CFCR’s FM-Phasis Fest. They have been preforming alongside local acts
such as We Were Lovers and touring artists from Vitoria to Halifax. The
band recently opened for Juno nominated artist Del Barber and will be
touring Alberta and Saskatchewan in November 2012.
