NATION, a brand-new electronic music and video projection performance will have its world debut at CASA on Thursday, March 5th at 7:00 pm. This innovative work features Lethbridge-based music artist Chandelier (Aaron Collier from Theatre Outré) in collaboration with Halifax-based video projection artist Nick Bottomley (DaPoPo’s The Drinking Game, 2B Theatre’s When It Rains). Featuring a 30-foot wide set comprised of 11 hanging paper scrolls, the audience is transported to a variety of environments through the use of projection. The experience is provided a live electronic soundtrack composed entirely from natural and found sounds gathered from around the world. The show moves through ambient soundscapes to beat-driven anthems to delicate melodies strung together by a quizzical and mysterious unseen narrator voiced by Lethbridge performer Erica Hunt (New West Theatre).

After years of touring independently the artists met in 2012 through mutual admiration and discovered a shared interest in the great expanses of their homeland, its landscape, and the culture and media that has become a part of it. The creation of NATION occurred over one year in Alberta and Nova Scotia, with its genesis at CASA in November 2013 as the centre’s inaugural artists in residence. “I’m so pleased to be able to debut this show for the community that gave it the initial spark of support. We are very proud of this work”, says Collier. Through this development process the concept grew to encompass a worldview, exploring themes of technology, media, travel and nature through the lens of dreams. The show is imagined as the subconscious stirrings of our great collective human nation at rest.

The development of this show has been made possible by support from Arts Nova Scotia and in particular this Lethbridge debut performance has been graciously supported by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the City of Lethbridge through the Heart Of Our City program. Tickets are $15 for this one-night 60 minute performance and are available at Blueprint Records, Umami Shop, Club Didi and the University of Lethbridge box office. A reception is generously being hosted at Plum directly after the performance to celebrate this new work.

Casa is the realization of a 20 year dream, shared by many in the Lethbridge arts community, to expand or replace the Bowman Arts Centre. This unique new facility far surpasses the original vision for expansion, and sets a new standard for interdisciplinary arts centres. It is about experimentation, incubation, learning and growing. Casa was built to serve a multi-generational community, with varying art skill sets and interests in all disciplines of the arts.

Designing the building was a comprehensive and collaborative process led by Nyhoff Architecture from (Calgary) working in conjunction with the local architectural firm of Ferrari Westwood Babits. The Architectural team visited numerous arts education institutions and also met with members of the local arts community to define requirements for a truly functional 42,000 square foot art centre. The resulting building design is truly impressive.

Funding for the project were provided by the Federal Build Canada Fund ($6,000,000.), the Provincial MSI Fund ($14,900,000.) and the City of Lethbridge ($200,000).
