German
composer Carl Orff composed the poetic and scenic cantata Carmina
Burana in the mid-1930s from a series of medieval poems translated
mostly into Latin with some middle high German verse. First performed in
Frankfurt in 1937 under the baton of Bertil Wetzelsberger, this piece
was given an uneasy welcome into German society during the Nazi regime
due to its sensual overtones. As the popularity of Orff’s work began to
rise, the piece quickly became the most famous German music in its time.
Explore
the magic of vocal and instrumental accompaniment in this powerful
work, which begins and ends with the well-known O Fortuna. Throughout
the movements, we discover a range of emotions including the highs and
lows of wealth and fortune, the passionate throws of lust and the luxury
of overindulgence. With melodic influence from the Baroque and
Renaissance movements, this particular piece is said to be the
culmination of Orff’s admiration for Igor Stravinsky’s early work.
Carmina Burana boasts challenging arias for baritones with the falsetto
tones needed in Olim lacus colueram, which beautifully accompany the
incredible depth of woodwind and percussion instruments.
