Drone Music is a democratic genre, an inherently collaborative genre.
Drone music encapsulates and includes all kinds of sounds: bagpipes,
chanting, tandura, the diverse landscape of electronic musicians who orchestrate knobs and pedals into otherworldly soundscapes.
Drone music, with its extended or repeating tones, is a re-imagining, a
redefining of the ears’ relationship to silence, to ground, to negative
space. Drone is easy to understand but broad enough to encapsulate a
wide variety of experimental streams. It’s a fixed-point singleton for
the avant-garde; challenging, yet accessible to the layperson, with a
creative path stretching onto infinite horizons.
And community
celebrations, holidays are important. They are a way for us to celebrate
a moment, to stake out a moment in the passage of our lives and give it
meaning. Most holidays slowly harden into consumeristic celebrations
that bear little resemblance to their community roots, and end up making
us feel more alienated from each other.
Drone Day is a
reclamation of the idea of a holiday, of a community celebration with no
purpose beyond a shared interest in drone music, a community, and a
marked moment in time.

Art began as some crude sketches on rock walls. History brought in
countless techniques to improve upon these sketches culminating in the
most realistic portrayal of perspective, depth, color, shading, and
ultimate photorealism. Upon the perfection of realism in art, what
direction was there to go? A breakdown of the perfection. Back to the
basics. Similarly, the dawn of the synthesizer brought a newness to the
musical tone. One could modulate these sounds in countless directions to
create wildly unusual new sounds. With the addition of decades of
technology, these have become ultimately realistic. Sometimes, however,
the most interesting new musical direction comes from simplification.
Yankee Yankee breaks these down to synthesized loops in basic form.
Sounds being immediately recognizable as synthesized tones, does nothing
to hinder the spectacle of visionary experimental electronic
minimalism.
5:45 Valiska http://www.valiska.com/
Sedate bowed strings. Out-of-tune piano plunks. A brisk clarinet reed.
These are the potential makings of a great honky-tonk jazz band.
Compellingly, these potentially also make up just some of the synthetic
sonic palette of Valiska, who blurs musical distinction. In fact, the
solo-act smears those lines, literally streaking them across his sets of
noisy neo-classicism and has, as a result, put himself among some of
the top experimental artists in the country. Close your eyes and drift
in and out of these soundscapes.
