Everything from electronica to David Bowie and the blues this week

There is plenty of music happening this week, much of it on Thursday, Aug, 16 including Todd Wolfe, who used to play with Sheryl Crow, and Austin songwriter/ fiddle player Carrie Rodriguez. Quit the City play Lethbridge , Aug. 18. Photo submitted

Carrie Rodriguez plays the Geomati Attic at 8 p.m. Sharp, while Todd Wolf will be  at the Slice  around 9:30 p.m.

Some of the other highlights this week are the Lethbridge Electronic Music Festival, taking place Aug 18 from 11 a.m.-11 p.m. in Galt Gardens.

Other highlights include Calgary area country/rock band Jo Hikk who play the Casino Lethbridge on the weekend. They have a couple minor hits on the radio including “Pimp My Tractor,” and a cover of the Stampeders’ “Sweet City Woman,” and “My Kind of Radio.”


 Another special event is the special Derby Dames fundraiser, featuring several Lethbridge musicians playing at the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Aug. 18. Lustre Creame, Shipbreaker and Church will all be performing. Doors open at t 8 p.m.


 If you like David Bowie, you will want to be at the Slice, Aug. 17 for the Ziggy Stardust 40th Anniversary cabaret featuring the New Weather Machine, Jesse Northey and the Dandelions and more. It is a masquerade so feel free to dress up as your favourite incarnation of David Bowie. There will be prizes for best costumes Admission is six dollars in advance, $10 at the door.

Other exciting shows happening this week including the Winnipeg  folk/ roots band the Hollerin’ Pines. The group has never played in Lethbridge before. Winnipeg roots/folk band  Hollerin’ Pines formed at various “after parties’ in and round the vibrant Winnipeg roots and blues scene. They play the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Aug. 18

Backstreet South also has a big rock show this week with My Mother the Carjacker and  Quit the City.  My Mother the Carjacker are a Calgary based jam band with an irreverant edge who are inspired by grunge, rock  and punk  acts like Primus, System of a Down, Nirvana and Queens of the Stone Age. 

Quit the City are a Calgary born, Vancouver based rock band who blend elements of psychedelic rock with southern rock and grunge. There is a five dollar cover charge for the show which begins at 9 p.m.

And get a taste of how Australians do the blues, Aug. 20 when the Murder Mouse Blues band visit the the Slice. While they aren’t strictly a blues band they can play to any audience and have during their first Canadian tour.Their Canadian tour brings them to the Slice in Lethbridge, Aug. 20 and the Twin Butte General Store, Aug. 14.

Depending on the audience, it could be a crazy dance party or a laid back evening of folk, roots and blues.


There wil be a five dollar cover for the show which begins at approximately 9 p.m.


Last, but not least, Whoop-Up Days  is slowly coming upon us.


 Calgary based country star Aaron Lines opens up Whoop-Up Days this year, Tuesday, Aug 21. You can hear a variety of his hit on country radio including  “Cheaper to Keep her,” “Moments That Matter,”  “ the Trouble With California,” and “Waitin’ on the Wonderful,”. Admission to the show is free with Whoop-Up Days admission ($15 at the gate, $10 in advance) The show begins at 8 p.m.
