Plenty of bagpipe filled fun with the Mudmen

E-mail Print PDF

What is more fun than bagpipes? Two bagpipes. Southern Ontario Celtic rock band the Mudmen were happy to supply all the bagpipes you The Mudmen rock the bagpipes. Photo by Richard Amerycould ever want at their  superb show at Soundgarden, April 8.

I just missed their first set, but stuck around for set two.
They were just getting warmed up. They played a selection of amped up traditional Celtic number s like “The Night Old Pat Murphy Died,” as well as their own.

Bagpiping behemoths Sandy and Rob Campbell mugged  for the  crowd, though suck mostly to the background and blew their hearts out.

But lead singer Mike Meacher took centre stage singing with an immediately appealing lovely lilting tenor while strumming a gorgeous double necked acoustic guitar though he switched to electric guitar for more rocking numbers. Meacher talked about the history and stories behind the traditional songs.

Sandy Campbell mugs for the audience. Photo by Richard AmeryHe looked a little like Great Big Sea’s Alan Doyle and definitely sounded like him.
In addition to Celtic classics, they played some brand new original material and turned Johnny Cash’s “Ring Of Fire” into a Celtic  song with the dual bagpipes playing the horn melodies.
