Todd Lacharite is looking forward to  the second edition of  his popular Shuffle Up and Deal project. The first time it was to raise money for the Bowman Arts Centre’s adult special needs art program. This time 100 per cent of the proceeds will be donated to the Royal Canadian Legion.
He contacted 53 local artists to explore the theme of “nose art” or art used to decorate the nose cones of airplanes in the Second World War.
“I’m really impressed with the art,” Lacharite said.

It runs along similar lines to last year’s “Shuffle Up and Deal” for the adult art program at the Bowman Arts Centre— 53 artists were asked to design individual playing cards, which have been made into decks of cards. The cards will be sold with all proceeds going to the Legion. The 1,000 decks were sold for $15 each at the Farmer’s Market, July 6,13 and 20, at the air show and at the Bowman Arts Centre.

As a special bonus, the original individual pieces are being auctioned off in a silent auction ending at a gala event at the Legion, July 23, during the Lethbridge Air show featuring live music by the Necessities and Matt Robinson.

The pieces were on display at the Owl until July 2 but have since been moved to the Legion. The silent auction has already begun through a bid book, with each piece having its own bidding page. While some pieces already have bids as high as $300, some don’t have any at all.

If you aren’t going to the South Country Fair this weekend, check out a couple unique art exhibits opening at the Bowman Arts Centre on Saturday, July 16.

Local artist Len Komanac and yours truly wPatrons get a sneak peek at Dr. Strangelen at the Bowman. Photo by Richard Ameryill both be opening our exhibits at the Bowman Arts Centre this weekend.
My exhibit, the Essence of Music: Musical Moments features a solid overview of my career covering music, both the cornucopia of amazing local acts as well as some superb touring acts.

Most of them have been blown up from digital photos from the past three years, since I started L.A. Beat. Most of them have appeared on the site or in the Lethbridge Sun Times.

I also went through my files and dug up some old black and white photos from the beginning of my career as photo editor/ photographer and writer for the University of Lethbridge newspaper the Meliorist back in the ’90s and found old pics of some of the cats still playing on the scene.
“It’s a good interesting historical archive of music in this city,” observed curator Darcy Logan who has made my work look pretty awesome in massive white matted frames.

Artists and musicians needed for Arts Days 2011

E-mail Print

Fire spinners were among the performers at Arts Days last year. Photo by Richard AmeryThe Allied Arts council needs artists and musicians for this year's, bigger and better installment of Arts Days, Sept. 30-Oct. 2. The deadline to get involved with this event is June 30.
“There will be a broad range of visual artists and music . And we’ll probably add a literary component as well,” said Ashley Markus, Allied Arts Council communications co-ordinator.

She said they have already received quite a few applications including several new faces.
As anyone who attended this two day arts party in Galt Gardens last year will attest, Arts Days is a great way for artists and musicians to show off their music and works.
There are three components to Arts Days which will be combined into one wild weekend.

The first one, the Art Walk , matches local artists and their works with local downtown businesses. Artists will have their works on display and may even be creating them right there, so you can watch the artistic process unfold. It takes place on the Friday and Saturday during the day. Over 50 artists and businesses were involved with the event last year.

The second part of the event is the artisans market, which takes place in Galt Gardens on the Friday and Saturday.
