Description

Park Meadows Baptist Church began with a need and a vision. As one couple and a small group of young people prayed, God gave them a vision for a new outreach in the community. After sharing their dream with the Area Secretary, a young Pastor named Bruce Merrifield accepted the challenge to start a Church extension work in Lethbridge.

After meeting together since the spring of 1974 as Bible study groups, and following much prayer, our first worship service took place on March 12, 1976 at the Wilson Junior High School with 23 people participating.

At our first Business Meeting after earnest prayer, we set a goal to have 75 people attending in the first year. By March 1977 we had an average attendance of 75 in our morning worship service. In April, our attendance was 77 and 85 by May. This was exciting and very encouraging for our small beginning.

After the “Here is Life” Campaign in our city with Campus Crusade for Christ, we did door-to door evangelism for a whole year with a group of ten to twelve young people. Our young people’s group increased in two years from eight to over forty.

Our first baptismal service took place in Stan Siwik Swimming Pool in October, 1976, with seven young people being baptized. On February 4, 1978, Park Meadows Baptist Church was recognized and accepted as a Member Church of the Alberta Baptist Association. In that same year we decided we needed a church building and plans were made to build. The Association purchased our building lot of 1.58 acres for $80,000 and construction soon followed.

Since building the original church structure three additional building projects have been completed. The first addition increased sanctuary, classroom and foyer space. The second addition added an office addition and the last expansion provided a larger nursery and gymnasium.

Park Meadows Baptist Church continues to be a place where people can discover who God is, a place where we are accepted for who we are, a place to learn about God and His plan for each of us and a place where people are encouraged to live out God’s purpose for their individual lives.
