Beethoven and Schubert are undeniable masters of the chamber music genre, and their oeuvre is an embarrassment of riches. Musaeus has selected two of the finest: Beethoven’s Quartet Opus 18 No. 6 adventurously experiments with form in this rapidly evolving genre, and Schubert’s String Quintet in C Major Op. 164, his final work, is often heralded as one of the finest chamber music works of all time. To these selections, we add a contemporary twist: the world premiere of the first String Quartet by the University of Lethbridge’s Brian Black.
